About Scotland

Ancient, Wild & Endlessly Beautiful

Scotland occupies the northern third of Great Britain, bordered by England to the south and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. It is a land of extraordinary contrast — from the rugged grandeur of the Highlands and the mystical silence of its sea lochs, to the buzzing culture of Edinburgh and the windswept outer isles.

Covering approximately 78,000 km², Scotland encompasses a staggering range of landscapes in a compact geography. In a single day you can move from dramatic volcanic peaks to pristine white beaches, from ancient Caledonian forests to medieval city skylines etched against stormy skies.

A Nation Forged in History

Neolithic Settlers

The earliest settlers build Skara Brae in Orkney — a preserved stone-age village older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.

Kingdom of Scotland

Kenneth MacAlpin unites the Picts and Scots, founding the Kingdom of Alba — the precursor to modern Scotland.

Wars of Independence

William Wallace leads the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Robert the Bruce later secures Scottish independence at Bannockburn in 1314.

Acts of Union

Scotland unites with England and Wales to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, while retaining its own legal, educational and religious systems.

Scottish Enlightenment

Scotland produces some of the greatest minds of the modern world — Adam Smith, David Hume, James Watt, and Alexander Graham Bell.

Scottish Parliament

Devolution brings a new Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, restoring significant self-governance and cementing Scotland's distinct national identity.

What Makes Scotland Unique

🥃
Scotch Whisky

Scotland is home to over 140 distilleries producing single malts and blended whiskies exported to every corner of the globe. From peaty Islay drams to the floral Speyside expressions, whisky is Scotland's liquid heritage — and a £6 billion industry.

🎶
Bagpipes & Music

The Great Highland Bagpipe is perhaps the most iconic Scottish symbol. Traditional Celtic music — from ceilidh dances to haunting laments — runs deep in Scotland's cultural veins, performed at festivals, weddings, and Highland Games year-round.

The Clan System

Scotland's clan system is one of the world's most enduring social structures. Each clan — identified by distinctive tartan patterns — carries centuries of stories, battles, and kinship. Many Scots worldwide still identify strongly with their ancestral clan.

Birthplace of Golf

Golf was invented in Scotland in the 15th century. St Andrews — the "Home of Golf" — has hosted the Open Championship for over 150 years. Scotland has more golf courses per capita than anywhere else on Earth.

🍽️
Scottish Cuisine

From world-renowned Aberdeen Angus beef and hand-dived Orkney scallops to the notorious haggis and cranachan dessert, Scottish cuisine celebrates its land and sea. Edinburgh and Glasgow boast award-winning restaurant scenes rivalling any European city.

📚
Literature & Folklore

Scotland gave the world Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Its landscape is woven with folklore — kelpies in the lochs, selkies on the shore, and the enduring mystery of Nessie beneath the dark waters of Loch Ness.

"My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here. My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer."

— Robert Burns, 1789
